What is the difference between a PIN and Password?

PINs and Passwords are both ways of protecting your devices or accounts. They can be used to prevent unauthorised use of telephones, computers, tablets, email accounts, bank accounts, etc.

PIN stands for Personal Identification Number, which means that a PIN is composed by digits (1, 2, 3,4…) and is usually short because it can have 4,5,6 digits. A password, on the other hand, is supposed to be long and use alphanumeric values such as lower and upper case letters, digits, special characters.

In order to protect your device or account, it is better to use a password than using a PIN. If you choose to use a PIN or if the PIN is the only supported way, you have to avoid using 123, 1234, your birthday, years and other simple numbers because they are easy to guess.

If you to choose to use a password, make sure that you use a strong one, and this comprises capital and small letters, digits, and symbols. You should also avoid using your names or the names of your children as those who want to have access to your devices or accounts mostly use those names while trying to guess your passwords.
